Choosing the right server location affects page speed, user experience and whether your business can operate at all. This guide compares IMIDC's Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, US (Los Angeles), Singapore, South Africa, Russia and Southeast Asia data centers by latency to mainland China and to your target market, shows which regions suit which platforms, and explains how to test with ping and mtr before you order.

Step 1: Start with Where Your Users Are

The golden rule is to stay close to your users. If visitors and staff are mainly in mainland China, look at nearby locations such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. If you sell overseas, follow the target country and treat China only as the place you manage the server from. Note: VPS plans are offered in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, South Africa and Russia (Singapore on request); dedicated servers are offered in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, the US (Los Angeles), Moscow and Southeast Asia.

Step 2: Compare Data-Center Regions and Platforms

Latency below is a general description only; the real figure depends on the route (CN2, CMI, Unicom 9929, etc.) and your city, so always test.

RegionLatency to mainland ChinaMarkets and platformsNotes

US Los AngelesMediumAmazon US, TikTok Shop US, Shopify stores, AI toolsGreat for North America; ask about optimized routes for China

South AfricaHighTakealot, African businessesLowest latency for African visitors
Russia (Moscow)Medium–highOzon, Wildberries, Yandex ads, Russian-language sitesNetflix, TikTok and ChatGPT are not available in Russia

Step 3: Test Latency with ping and mtr Before Ordering

Ask our team for a test IP before ordering, then test from your office and from a machine in your target market. Look at average latency, jitter and packet loss rather than the best single result. Replace the example IP 203.0.113.10 with the test IP:

# Linux / macOS: 50 pings, check average latency and loss
ping -c 50 203.0.113.10

# Install mtr
apt install -y mtr-tiny # Debian/Ubuntu
yum install -y mtr # CentOS/Rocky/AlmaLinux
brew install mtr # macOS

# 100-probe report with loss and latency per hop
mtr -rwc 100 203.0.113.10

# Windows (Command Prompt or PowerShell)
ping -n 50 203.0.113.10
tracert 203.0.113.10
pathping 203.0.113.10

How to read it: evening peak results (20:00–23:00 local time) are more meaningful than daytime ones. If mtr shows loss at one middle hop but not at the final hop, that router is just rate-limiting ICMP and it does not affect traffic. For deeper analysis see the tutorials "Speed test and traceroute" and "Check the return route to China".

Step 4: Confirm the IP Type and Service Availability

For e-commerce, advertising or AI tools, also confirm the IP's geolocation, whether it is a native IP, and whether the target site is open in that country. See "How to check whether an IP is native" and "Streaming and AI unlock test".

Platform policies change and availability in a region can shift. Check the target platform's terms for that country before ordering; you can contact us beforehand to confirm the configuration or request a test.

FAQ

Hong Kong or Japan for users in mainland China?

Southern China usually sees lower latency to Hong Kong, while eastern and northern China often get similar results to Japan. Your own test from your city and carrier decides.

Which location should I use for TikTok?

Use the country where your shop or account is registered, such as the US, Japan or Southeast Asia. Avoid Hong Kong and Russia, where TikTok is not officially offered.

Can one server serve several countries?

Yes, but distant countries will see higher latency. For multi-market businesses, deploy per region or put static content behind a CDN.

Still not sure which region fits? Open a support ticket with your target market and the IMIDC 24/7 team will advise.
