"Cheap price, great specs, and three months later the provider vanished." "Something broke, I opened a ticket, and it took two days to get a reply." "They advertised a native IP, but when I checked, it was a broadcast IP."
Stories like these are all too common in the overseas server world. There are hundreds of providers out there, each with a slicker landing page than the last, yet what actually decides whether your business succeeds is often what those landing pages don't show you.
IMIDC (Rainbow Network Limited) has been in the overseas IDC business since 2014 and has served 5,000+ customers. Over more than a decade, we've seen many customers pay the price for choosing the wrong provider. Today we're turning that experience into 8 selection criteria. Whether or not you end up choosing IMIDC, we hope they help.
Where do the provider's IPs come from? Are they owned resources obtained through legitimate channels, or sub-leased through layer after layer of resellers? This directly affects IP stability, reputation and traceability.
How to check: run a whois lookup to see the IP's registered organization, and find out whether the provider is a member of a Regional Internet Registry (RIR).
IMIDC's answer: we're a member of four major RIRs, RIPE NCC, APNIC, ARIN and AFRINIC. Our IP resources come from legitimate sources, and IPs in 24 regions are traceable.
Even the best server needs a reliable data center. Look at the facility tier, power redundancy, cooling and fire suppression systems.
IMIDC's answer: Tier3+ data centers with 2N power redundancy, and a 99.9% uptime commitment.
Route quality determines access speed. For businesses serving users in mainland China, pay particular attention to premium return routes such as CN2. For businesses serving overseas users, look at international bandwidth and interconnection quality.
IMIDC's answer: CN2 routes direct to mainland China, 10Gbps uplinks, and support for BGP and Anycast. You can verify this yourself using How to Test Server Routes and Return Routing.
Most businesses serve more than one market. The more regions a provider covers, the easier it is to expand into multiple markets and manage everything in one place.
IMIDC's answer: 9 data centers covering Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Russia, the US and South Africa, with IP resources covering 24 regions.
Cyberattacks are now routine, and a server without protection is like a warehouse with no lock on the door.
IMIDC's answer: DDoS protection, plus a CDN service for both security and acceleration. Learn more in the DDoS Attack Protection Guide.
Storage type, CPU, memory and bandwidth determine how much workload a server can handle. Watch out for overselling: impressive specs on paper, but resources heavily shared in practice.
IMIDC's answer: all-SSD storage across our entire range of cloud servers (VPS) and dedicated servers, with support for multiple IPs (up to a /24). There's a fit for every stage, from getting started to scaling up.
Server problems don't pick a convenient time. When something goes down at 3 AM, will someone answer? Can they explain the issue clearly? Can they fix it?
IMIDC's answer: 24/7 technical support in multiple languages, and colocation customers can also use our Remote Hands service.
Businesses grow and needs change. Can the provider offer a full upgrade path, from VPS to dedicated server, from rental to colocation, from leased IPs to your own ASN? Is it easy to migrate when you switch providers?
IMIDC's answer: our product line covers cloud servers, dedicated servers, colocation, IP resources, ASN services and CDN, and we offer free migration.

Both. Individual developers can start with a cloud server (VPS), while businesses can choose dedicated servers, multiple IPs, colocation, and advanced services such as ASN and BGP.
Common use cases include B2B export websites, cross-border e-commerce, overseas social media operations, games and real-time applications, SaaS, and CDN and network services. Contact our support team for an assessment of your specific needs.
